Becoming a dad blogger could not have come at a more appropriate time. I'm kicking off my Canadian dad blog on Father's Day, which just happens to be today! Hooray!
Let me start off by saying Happy Father's Day to all you Daddies out there in
Blogland. Here's an even
bigger Happy Father's Day to all you Canadian Dad Bloggers.
I am happily writing
this article from
bed at 10:30am, a rare event in a house full of 7 kids.
So I uploaded my very first Dad Blog
yesterday. I was a
little unsure of what my first post should be, so I wrote all my ideas down over the
course of 3-4
days. It's amazing how every little thing that happens to you in a day can make you
think "I should
blog about that".
If you can imagine what a father of seven goes through in a day,
you'll agree that
over the course of a few days, hundreds of ideas must have passed through my head. I
jotted them
down one by one.
Looking back at my brainstormed list, a few of the ideas really
jumped off the
page. The first was my second oldest daughter's stubbed toe incident and the 48 hours of
complaining
that ensued. The second was a fighting couple at the grocery store arguing about
what size of
peanut butter to buy. He insisted that the bigger one was twice the size for only $1
more, but she
refused to believe that he could ever eat that much peanut butter.
I debated over
the two for most of
the day, coming to the conclusion that it didn't matter which one I posted if no one
was going to
read it. I needed to focus on getting some traffic to my blog before choosing which
post is best.
I've a number of tricks up my sleeve for getting some quick traffic to my sites to
they just won't work
in this case. So I decided to write up a Canadian Dad Blogger Meme to find myself
some other Dad
bloggers to start networking with. I had my wife twitter (@quiltcetera) out a
request for favorite Dad
bloggers, and was very pleased by the dozens of recommendations I received. I then
referenced
these names at blog catalog's canada section and found a few blogs that fit the
bill.
Not only did they
need to be in Canada, but more importantly they needed to be blogging about topics
that genuinely
interested me. There is nothing I hate more than a comment on one of my sites from
someone that I
can tell has never even read the page they are commenting on. This is why I wanted a
genuine
interest in their work, so I could comment honestly on the post I was about to send
them their Meme
invite through.
To make a long story short, I have made my first post a Canadian Dad Blogger Meme. I
was
pleasantly surprised to see that one of the first people I tagged, newmediamike, has
answered the
meme and sent it on to three other Canadian Dad Bloggers. You can see his answers here.
As for
the rest
of my posts they will be flowing onto my blog alarmingly fast as I have a lot to say
and am stoked to
finally have an audience.
